Job Details:

Kampala International University in collaboration with Makerere University Lung Institute, the National TB Program and the World Health Organization (WHO) are together implementing a study titled “Optimizing the Implementation and Scale-Up of the WHO Treatment-Decision Algorithms for Children with Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Sub-Saharan Africa” (OPTIC-TB). The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, feasibility and acceptability of implementing the WHO-recommended Treatment-Decision Algorithms (TDAs) for pulmonary TB in children under 10 years old to increase case detection, reduce TB treatment delay and improve TB treatment outcomes in Uganda, Tanzania and DR Congo. The study has received funding from EDCTP and seeks to recruit two Research Assistants (RAs) to support data collection.

Location: Nwoya, Gulu city, Kitgum, Lamwo, Bundibugyo, Fort Portal, Kamwenge, Kasese, Kyegegwa. Kyenjonjo

Job purpose:
• The Research Assistants will be responsible for field data collection from health facilities in the selected regions.
• Responsible for seeking clearance from the district administration and participating in health facilities
• Responsible for identifying the study sites and respondents, obtaining consent and interviewing healthcare workers
• They should be able to summarize the emerging issues at the end of each day with a report.

Responsibilities:
The research assistants will
• Participate in a three-day training to orient them on the study objectives, methods, and tools for data collection.
• Take part in the pre-test of data collection tools
• Review of the data collection tools after the pre-test
• Collect Baseline data
• Identifying the study sites and respondents
• Obtaining consent and interviewing healthcare workers and other stakeholders
• Review of hospital records
• Collect data from the health information management system (HMIS) forms
• Provide a daily report of the project updates

Required Qualifications
• At least a bachelor’s degree in public health, Statistics, or any science-related field.
• Fluent in the local languages spoken in the districts where they will work
• More than two years experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative data
• They should be familiar with infectious disease-related records, HMIS forms

Skills
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal
• Ability to document and produce concise, informative and appropriate written documentation
• Ability to engage people in a discussion
